Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare, Photonics & Optical Systems, and Data Science for Health.

Background

Dr. Andrew Katumba is a Ugandan engineer and academic specializing in photonics and artificial intelligence. He leads the Marconi Research and Innovation Lab at Makerere University, where his work bridges engineering and medicine to advance accessible technologies across Africa. His research applies artificial intelligence to healthcare, with a particular focus on cancer screening using medical imaging modalities including ultrasound, multiparametric MRI, and CT scans, developed in collaboration with the Uganda Cancer Institute for resource-constrained settings. Beyond healthcare applications, his technical background spans neuromorphic computing, photonic reservoir computing, and optical communication systems. He has worked professionally in Belgium, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
